What is Spiritual Direction?
With Mary Ebb
January 19, 2026
While “spiritual direction” might sound a bit lofty, it is simply a relationship in which one person guides another in attending to the presence and call of God. Sometimes called “spiritual companioning”, spiritual direction is for anyone yearning for God. You may have a sense of longing for a deeper relationship with God or simply a sense of discontent with how your spiritual life is progressing.
The spiritual direction relationship includes a director and a directee. The director creates a peaceful environment for a conversation to take place. The director typically does more listening than talking, asking leading or probing questions as needed or appropriate.
